{"id":11818,"date":"2020-05-16T20:12:34","date_gmt":"2020-05-16T17:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/city\/civilization-maya-palenque-yaxchilan-tulum\/"},"modified":"2021-01-09T17:44:49","modified_gmt":"2021-01-09T14:44:49","slug":"mayan-cities-palenque-yaxchilan-tulum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/historical-sites\/mayan-cities-palenque-yaxchilan-tulum\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayan civilization: travel to Palenque, Yaxchilan and Tulum"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>TRIP TO THE MAYAN CULTURE<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong>HISTORY AND AGRICULTURE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/sardinia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sardinian<\/a>, descendant of the <strong>Shardana warriors<\/strong>, people of the sea that nobody has ever known how to fight and nobody defeated them.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s why ancient civilizations have always fascinated me and my trip to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mexico<\/a> could only include a few days to dedicate to them.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen many photos of these places, but being there was a great emotion, a point of arrival.<br \/>\nPreviously I had already seen the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Great Wall<\/a> but they are too different, not comparable works.<br \/>\nBut I can do it with similar sites: the Aztec city of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/historical-sites\/teotihuacan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teotihuacan<\/a>, near Mexico City, is equally beautiful.<br \/>\nThe Temples of Angkor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/cambodia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cambodia<\/a>, are what most amazed me in all my travels.<br \/>\nI know to be one of the very few people in the world to think that, compared to the world heritage just mentioned, for me <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/peru\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Machu Picchu<\/a> is one of the most disappointing and overrated places.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s go in order:<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists believe that the appearance of the Mayan civilization dates about back to <strong>2500 BC<\/strong>.<br \/>\nOver the centuries they have become <strong>phenomenal astronomers<\/strong>, studying perfectly the movements of stars and planets.<br \/>\nThey used these discoveries in agriculture, following the rain and crop cycles.<br \/>\nAnd this knowledge is still use in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/nature\/escursioni-imperdibili-chiapas-messico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chiapas<\/a> by indigenous peoples and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/historical-people\/ezln-zapatista-army-national-liberation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zapatista<\/a> communities.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>THE MAYA CALENDAR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Mayans were among the first in Mesoamerica to write with a <strong>logosyllabic alphabet<\/strong> and still leave scientists marvel because their <strong>sophisticated and complex astronomical calendars<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe calculations were so perfect that they are still more precise than we currently use.<br \/>\nIn fact, the Earth makes a complete turn around the Sun in 365.242189 days.<br \/>\nFor the Mayans, one year lasted 365.242036 days while in our gregorian calendar 365.2425 days are considered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11784 size-full lazyload\" title=\"Mayan-calendar\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/calendario-Maya.jpg\" alt=\"Mayan-calendar\" width=\"784\" height=\"750\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 784px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 784\/750;\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Mayans used 3 intersecting calendars:<br \/>\n&#8211; the <strong>religious calendar (tzolkin)<\/strong>: it combined 13 numbers with 20 names, thus creating a period of 260 days,<br \/>\n&#8211; the <strong>civil calendar (haab)<\/strong>: like ours, composed by 365 days but divided into 18 months with 20 days each, plus 5 &#8220;additional&#8221; days,<br \/>\n&#8211; the <strong>long cycle<\/strong>: indicates the number of days since the beginning of the Mayan era and is the most complex system, using a mixed base-20 \/ base-18 mathematical representation of a number.<\/p>\n<p>I try to explain it.<br \/>\nIt consists of <strong>kin<\/strong> (1 day), <strong>uinal<\/strong> (1 = 20 kin), <strong>tun<\/strong> (1 = 18 uinal = 360 days), <strong>katun<\/strong> (1 = 20 tun = 7200 days, about 20 years), <strong>baktun<\/strong> (1 = 20 katun = 144,000 days, approximately 394 years)<\/p>\n<p>Kin, tun e katun are numbered from 0 to 19, uinal from 0 to 17.<br \/>\nOn the numbering of baktun, there are different opinions.<br \/>\nThere are those who limit it to 13 and from this was the theory that the Maya considered <strong>December 21, 2012<\/strong> as the date of the end of the world.<br \/>\nAccording to the Mayan calendar, that date would have been 12.19.19.17.19 i.e. 12 baktun, 19 katun, 19 tun, 17 uinal, 19 kin.<br \/>\nThe next day it therefore became 0.0.0.0.0 or 13.0.0.0.0<br \/>\nOther scientists instead consider the limit of the baktuns at 19 and in this case the day 19.19.19.17.19 of the long cycle will be in the year 4772.<\/p>\n<p>According to these calculations, the day 0 of the Maya, or better <strong>the day 0.0.0.0.0<\/strong>, would be <strong>August 13, 3114 BC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ASTRONOMY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Mayan world revolved around a <strong>celestial map<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe cities were built in such a way that the buildings allowed observation of the sun, moon, planets and constellations.<br \/>\nSome astronomical object are visible exactly in the center of a window during an <strong>eclipse<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe day of the <strong>equinox<\/strong> of spring and autumn Sun creates a play of light and shadow that draws the image of the Serpent God moving along the stairs of the temple.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11804 size-full lazyload\" title=\"Mexico-ceiba-tree\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ceiba.jpg\" alt=\"Mexico-ceiba-tree\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ceiba.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ceiba-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ceiba-450x600.jpg 450w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 525px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 525\/700;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ceiba_(botanica)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ceiba<\/a> was the sacred tree that united the 13 heavens, the Earth and the 9 levels of the realm of the dead.<br \/>\nThis large structure operated according to the laws of astrology and the worship of ancestors.<br \/>\nAnother fundamental aspect for the Maya were <strong>cardinal points<\/strong>: east (the most important because it indicates the sunrise and was represented with the red color), west (on the contrary indicates the sun that disappears and is therefore represented with black), north (from there the rains come, color white) and south (yellow like the southern sun).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>GAMES AND SACRIFICES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An area dedicated to the &#8220;<strong>ball game<\/strong>&#8221;
