TROMSO: THE ARCTIC CAPITAL<\/strong><\/h1>\n

NORTHERN LIGHTS, MIDNIGHT SUN AND ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Troms\u00f8, considered the Arctic capital, is located about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, at 69\u00b040′ north latitude, in the heart of the wild between majestic mountains and beautiful fjords.<\/p>\n

In the north of Norway<\/a>, there is complete darkness during the polar night season
\nHere from 23 November to 18 January, the sun never rises<\/strong>, but is at most 3 degrees below the horizon, enough to ensure the presence of light.<\/p>\n

Troms\u00f8 is just under the oval of the Northern Lights<\/strong>, the area with the highest probability of seeing this magical phenomenon from the end of August to the end of April, generally between 6pm and midnight.
\nIf the sky is clear, you might see the Northern Lights right above the city, but to increase your chances you should go away from the lights of the city centre.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Troms\u00f8 has a milder coastal climate than other destinations at the same latitude.
\nThe average winter temperature is about -4\u00b0C, but if you\u2019re looking for the Northern Lights, remember that the temperature could be from -20\u00b0C to +5\u00b0C, so always stay in layers.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, from May 19 to July 26, the sun never sets.
\nWith the phenomenon of the midnight sun<\/strong> you can enjoy full daylight doing any activity 24 hours a day.<\/p>\n

Troms\u00f8 is also a strategic point to reach North Cape<\/a>, Svalbard Islands<\/a>, Lofoten Islands or Sweden and Finland.
\nThanks to its location beyond the Arctic Circle, it is considered the gateway to the North Pole<\/a> and has been the starting point for many Arctic expeditions.<\/p>\n

WHAT TO SEE<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Arctic Cathedral
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of Troms\u00f8\u2019s best-known buildings, the modern architecture of the Arctic Cathedral, featuring 11 aluminium-clad concrete panels on each side of the roof.
\nIt seems like an iceberg or a Sami tent and has often been compared to the famous Sydney Opera House.
\nIt takes about 25 minutes to get there from the city centre on foot or you can take bus 20, 24, 26 or 28.<\/p>\n

The main entrance is surrounded by a large window with a pronounced cross.<\/p>\n

Storsteinen Mountain<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A 15-minute walk from the Arctic Cathedral, on fine days you can take the Fjellheisen cable car<\/strong> to the top of the Storsteinen mountain. From here you have a wonderful view of the city (if low clouds don’t prevent the view).
\nOtherwise you can reach the top by climbing the 1,200 stone steps of the Sherpa Staircase.<\/p>\n

Troms\u00f8 Bridge<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Troms\u00f8 is located on the Troms\u00f8ya Island<\/strong>, connected to the mainland by an arched bridge.
\nYou can also walk to the Cathedral and see Troms\u00f8 from a different perspective.<\/p>\n

Domkirke<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The northernmost Protestant cathedral in the world<\/strong> is located in the quiet main street of Troms\u00f8 but I could only see it from the outside.
\nThe opening hours are very variable and uncertain but it\u2019s still a beautiful building of neo-gothic architecture, the only cathedral in Norway made entirely of wood.<\/p>\n

Perspektivet Museum<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I don’t know how long each photographic exhibition lasts, but the museum is free so you can “risk” visiting this neoclassical 1838 building.
\nSatisfaction or disappointment will still be subjective.
\nI saw unpublished photos<\/strong> that were very interesting for me.
\nOn the ground floor the photos made you imagine the cities\/villages and life in the Palestinian Territories before the war of 1948.<\/p>\n

Upstairs, instead, the different faiths of “homo religiosus” are shown.
\nOther photos show the history of Troms\u00f8, from the construction of the bridge to the airport.<\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

Troms\u00f8 Museum<\/strong>
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This is a multidisciplinary museum with first part dedicated to animals living in the Troms\u00f8 area and in the Arctic and about the climate change they are fighting.
\nThe upper floor first shows us the damage that man is creating with his waste, then explains the phenomenon of the Northern Lights.
\nThe museum closes with the interesting history and culture of the Sami people.<\/p>\n

Polaria<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I don\u2019t think you should consider this museum as an aquarium just because there are three seals, starfish, sponges and other Arctic fauna and flora.
\nBefore you go in, think about the panels outside that explain life in the Arctic<\/strong> and its importance.
\nTake your time to memorise and reflect.
\nThis museum is in fact the gateway to understanding Svalbard Islands<\/a> and what is happening with climate change.
\nUnderstanding the damage plastic does is essential for all of us.<\/p>\n

MS Polstjernan<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Housed inside a glass construction, it is the ship used to kill (or, as it was said at the time, \u201cbring home\u201d) at least 100,000 seals<\/strong>.
\nYou can walk on its decks, full of objects of the time, hunting tools, numerous photos, videos and objects related to polar expeditions.<\/p>\n

Thinking about what this boat has seen, however, almost makes you see the blood of the seals on deck.
\nIt was not very pleasant for me.<\/p>\n

The entrance ticket is included in that of the adjacent Polaria museum.<\/p>\n

The Polar Museum<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It would be better if this was called “the Polar Hunting Museum<\/strong>“.
\nI expected a different museum instead is the exaltation of hunters (especially seals and bears) and the description of hunting carried out over the centuries in the polar territories.
\nThere are many, too many, stuffed animals.
\nLooking into their eyes I wonder the sense of their presence in the museum, rather than in their natural habitat.<\/p>\n

The multilingual guides delivered free of charge at the entrance explain every object in the rooms (traps, weapons, writings, photos, drawings, reconstructions of scenes and hunting methods).
\nI have nothing against hunting when it is a necessity to survive, but here we really see almost ostentation and exhibitionism of man\u2019s blind force against animals.<\/p>\n

Animals<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The whale watching season<\/strong> varies from year to year depending on the presence of herring in the fjords.
\nIt usually runs from November to the end of January and there are several companies at the port that make special excursions.
\nSome of them also allow you to go into the water with whales, although this experience, given the weather, is not guaranteed.<\/p>\n

If you are interested, I suggest you to go to Tonga Islands<\/a>, where I swam with whales in Nuku\u2019alofa.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Husky<\/strong> are some of the most popular animals to meet in Troms\u00f8 and with them you could sled or walk in the woods.<\/p>\n

Another animal you’ll probably see is the reindeer<\/strong>. They often walk freely along the road or you can get to know the Sami people, with whom you can feed reindeer or have them tow you on a sleigh.<\/p>\n

HOW TO MOVE<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Flight<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are 3 connections between the city center and the airport:
\n– the express bus takes about 15 minutes, with several stops near the hotels and in strategic points of the city.
\n– the city bus lines 24, 40 and 42.
\n– taxis<\/p>\n

Ship<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hurtigruten<\/a> leaves Troms\u00f8 every day.<\/p>\n

The port is located about 4 km from the city centre.
\nYou can easily reach it on foot or by city buses 30 and 42.<\/p>\n

District buses
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

District buses offer some excursions around Troms\u00f8 municipality and depart from Prostneset, the city’s main bus station, which is located next to the Tourist Information Office.<\/p>\n

Bus 420<\/strong> Troms\u00f8 – Hella – Brensholmen – Sommar\u00f8y:
\nShort excursion from Troms\u00f8 around the southern part of the island of Kval\u00f8ya.<\/p>\n

Bus 425<\/strong> Troms\u00f8 – Ersfjordbotn:
\nFantastic views of the fjords and steep mountains.<\/p>\n

Bus 450<\/strong> Troms\u00f8 – T\u00f8nsvik – Oldervik:
\nReach hiking trails and see fantastic views of the sea and the Lyngen Alps.<\/p>\n

CONTINUE THE TRIP
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Northern Norway<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You could travel from Troms\u00f8 to Alta<\/strong> by bus and from there, after at least one night’s rest, take another bus to Kirkenes<\/strong> or Honningsv\u00e5g<\/strong>, from where you then reach Nordkapp – North Cape<\/a> or Knivskjellodden<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hurtigruten<\/a> departs daily from Troms\u00f8 with a 17-hour journey to Honningsv\u00e5g.<\/p>\n

Another option is to fly from Troms\u00f8 to Honningsv\u00e5g with stopover in Hammerfest.<\/p>\n

Svalbard Islands
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The only way to get to Svalbard<\/a> is by plane and there are daily flights from Troms\u00f8 to Longyearbyen<\/a>.
\nIn high season, from March to August, the number of flights increases.<\/p>\n

Remember that Svalbard is outside the Schengen area so you need passport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To the South of Norway
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you want to get excited traveling south, you have to travel by ship.
\nWith the Hurtigruten<\/a> you could reach Lofoten Islands, Bod\u00f8<\/a>, Trondheim<\/a> or Bergen.<\/p>\n

There is a daily bus connection from Troms\u00f8 to Fauske. From here you can continue south by train to Trondheim<\/a>, Oslo<\/a>, Bergen and other destinations.<\/p>\n

Sweden<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are several direct flights from Troms\u00f8 to Stockholm.<\/p>\n

The L\u00e4nstrafiken Norrbotten bus<\/strong> goes from Troms\u00f8 to Narvik, from where it continues to Bj\u00f6rkliden, Abisko and Kiruna in Sweden.
\nOr from Narvik you could continue by train to Boden, Lule\u00e5, Haparanda and Stockholm.<\/p>\n
