{"id":7571,"date":"2020-01-23T16:00:03","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T13:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cosmorevas.tk\/city\/siberia-irkutsk-and-baikal-lake\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T22:33:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T19:33:22","slug":"siberia-irkutsk-and-baikal-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/historical-sites\/siberia-irkutsk-and-baikal-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Siberia: Irkutsk and Baikal Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<section  class='av_textblock_section av-moops5dy-af95d5139996afe4a87cf31e60b940d3 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h1><strong>THE ATTRACTION OF SIBERIA<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong>GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL INFORMATION<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the common imagination, <strong>Siberia<\/strong> is always a very cold and inhospitable place.<br \/>\nFor this reason, going to Siberia was my objective.<\/p>\n<p>The Siberian region occupies almost 75% of the Russian territory, going from the Urals to the Pacific and from the border with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/mongolia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mongolia <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arctic Ocean<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->These over 13 million square kilometers are occupied by 3 inhabitants per square kilometer.<br \/>\nIn winter the temperature can go up to -76\u00b0F and the summers are warm but short.<br \/>\nThe ideal place to send enemies to work in Soviet gulags.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>HOW TO GET TO SIBERIA<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are over 20 airports serving Siberia, from international ones to smaller ones used as support in emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>But of course the most fascinating means of transport is the train, the Trans-Siberian linking Moscow to Vladivastok, or the Transmongolic which crosses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/destinations\/mongolia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mongolia<\/a> to Beijing.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/transport\/trans-siberian-trans-mongolian\/\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO DISCOVER THE TRANS-SIBERIAN \u2013 TRANS-MONGOLIAN<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/en\/transport\/trans-siberian-trans-mongolian\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3372 size-medium lazyload\" title=\"Trans-Siberian train \u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0430 - \u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043a\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/treno-Transiberiana-%D0%9C%D0%BE%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B0-%D0%92%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BA-1-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"Trans-Siberian train \u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0430 - \u0412\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043a\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 276px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 276\/300;\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>MY TRIP TO SIBERIA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At the <strong>Irkutsk<\/strong> station I get off the Trans-Siberian for my first long stop.<br \/>\nSiberia and Lake Baikal are worth a few days dedicated.<\/p>\n<p>I take the bus to <strong>Listvyanka<\/strong>, from which you can also reach <strong>Bolshie Koty<\/strong> by hydrofoil.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>THE BAIKAL LAKE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s impossible to imagine the Baikal as a lake<\/strong>. Even more difficult, in summer, to imagine it frozen.<br \/>\nIn summer it can easily be compared to the sea, in winter cars and trucks run on its icy base.<\/p>\n<p>636 km from north to south, 48 km of average width (maximum 79.4), 744 meters of average depth (1.642 meters the maximum) make it <strong>the deepest lake with the largest water volume in the world<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe estimated that it contains about <strong>20% of the Earth\u2019s fresh water<\/strong>, so clear and pure as to be <strong>drinkable<\/strong>.<br \/>\nVisibility in depth in its cold waters reaches even <strong>40 meters<\/strong>. It&#8217;s the only lake in which I swam.<\/p>\n<p>The environment of Lake Baikal is inhabited from beyond <strong>2.500 living beings<\/strong> (of which about 60% are animals).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listvyanka<\/strong>, the town on Lake Baikal closest to Irkutsk, consists of a main dirt road, where there are small restaurants, the market and souvenir shops.<br \/>\nAt the port you can eat <strong>freshly smoked omul<\/strong>.<br \/>\nOn the hill there is the astronomical observatory, from which better observe the immensity of this lake, which goes beyond the horizon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3325 lazyload\" title=\"View of Lake Baikal from the Listvyanka Observatory\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lago-Bajkal.jpg\" alt=\"View of Lake Baikal from the Listvyanka Observatory\" width=\"1000\" height=\"646\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lago-Bajkal.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lago-Bajkal-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lago-Bajkal-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lago-Bajkal-705x455.jpg 705w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Lago-Bajkal-450x291.jpg 450w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1000\/646;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>IRKUTSK<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The classic base for visiting Lake Baikal, the city of Irkutsk, deserves at least a dedicated day.<br \/>\nThe main street, the classic Karla Marksa, starts from a well-kept park, where children have fun with the fountain\u2019s water.<br \/>\nFollowing the road, we are accompanied to the Angara river by the Russian music spread from the crates attached to the lampposts of light. The city is alive and there are beautiful shops.<\/p>\n<p>Ulitsa Lenina, another classic street, perpendicular to Karla Marksa, leads to the river but passes by some beautiful parks where there is the statue of Tsar Alexander III, the Monument to the Soviet heroes and the eternal flame to their memory and, on the riverside, to remember <strong>350 years<\/strong> of the city (birthday on 2011), stands the statue in honor of the Cossack founder Yakov Pokhabov.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3369 size-full lazyload\" title=\"statue in honour of the founder of Irkutsk, the Cossack Yakov Pokhabov\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/statua-Yakov-Pokhabov-Irkutsk.jpg\" alt=\"statue Yakov Pokhabov Irkutsk\" width=\"212\" height=\"332\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/statua-Yakov-Pokhabov-Irkutsk.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/statua-Yakov-Pokhabov-Irkutsk-192x300.jpg 192w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 212px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 212\/332;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are dozens of statues in the city but the most ironic one I\u2019ve seen depicts one of the many boys who have arrived here with the Trans-Siberian Train and who remains speechless walking with his backpack over the streets of the capital of Siberia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3363 size-full lazyload\" title=\"statue of a backpacker in Irkutsk\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/statua-viaggiatore.jpg\" alt=\"statue of a backpacker in Irkutsk\" width=\"284\" height=\"534\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/statua-viaggiatore.jpg 284w, https:\/\/www.cosmorevas.tk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/statua-viaggiatore-160x300.jpg 160w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 284px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 284\/534;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another symbol of Siberia are <strong>wooden houses<\/strong> used against the Winter General.<\/p>\n<p>Some are so perfect they seem fake, others, certainly the most fascinating, show all the signs of the time and date back to the 17th century. To ensure a wall thickness of about 40 centimeters, the largest trunks of the Siberian forests were used.<br \/>\nYou have to analyze also their <strong>windows<\/strong>.
